Click here for more photos If you happened to pass by Pick and Bite on Wednesday 12th of March, you perhaps have seen a booth decorated with little dolls draped in traditional costumes. That was SMUKI’s booth, in our latest participation in the International Carnival 2009. International Carnival was an event that featured all SMU’s cultural clubs – those originating from Japan, Vietnam, India, Cambodia, South Korea, the Philippines, China, Indonesia and of course, Singapore. Each club showcased their uniqueness through games, food, dances and other performances. There was also catwalk by representatives of each country and photo booth where visitors had the chance to pose with the traditional costumes from each country. The little dolls that you probably saw portrayed the traditional costumes from the different provinces in Indonesia. Coupled with the tasty ‘batagor’ and ‘gado gado’ as well as the mini workshop on the art of weaving (or more commonly known as ‘anyaman’), visitors of the booth definitely experienced the ‘Indonesian’ feel. Many others had fun playing our mini quizzes on Indonesian vocabulary and maps (think Geo Challenge). The visitors stood a chance to win one pair of movie ticket. Happening at the same time as International Carnival was Bizcom’s BazaARR, where SMUKI brought you the Ngarojeng dance. People at the concourse were dazzled by the dashing performance at the stage in front of Koufu. The Ngarojeng performance was definitely something new and fresh from SMUKI. Instead of banging the floors, the dancers entertained the audience with more feminine and sleek waist movements. This was the first time Ngarojeng Dance was performed outside SMUKI events. The 12th of March was definitely an eventful day for SMUKI. SMUKI and the other cultural clubs have successfully brought to light the diverse culture that SMU students possess. SMUKI would also like to thank Office of International Relations as well as SMU Icon for letting SMUKI to be part of International Carnival 2009.
