GAYA 2009 Thank you

Delayed start. Unconfirmed scripts. Panic. That was how the process of GAYA 2009 began. As the task of scriptwriting was passed from one hand to another, SMUKI was approached by the founder of Maria Monique Last Wish Foundation, Ms Natalia S. Tjahja
.
Each GAYA is unique. In 2007, SMUKI’s inaugural musical production brought to you the Indonesian folk tale of Bawang Merah Bawah Putih. In 2008, GAYA brought to life the story of Gajah Mada, the hero of one of the biggest kingdoms in Indonesia, Majapahit. GAYA 2009: In a Heartbeat – the Beautiful Journey was a story about faith – how believing will get you far.

After almost a year of hard work and sweat, the long-awaited 27th and 28th of February finally arrived. As this was the first time SMUKI was staging a two-night show, some were worried about the occupancy rate. However, as truth would have it, GAYA 2009 had a boastful turnout of more than 600 people in the audience, double of last year’s figure. Among the faces of the audience were Mr. Wardana, the Ambassador of Indonesia to Singapore as well as the legendary Indonesian diva Titiek Puspa.

Supported by highly diverse cast and crew, In a Heartbeat was really a journey full of drama both on and off stage. Onstage, the convincing acting spurred laughter inside the DBS Auditorium and at other times reduced many to tears. Off stage, the practices were far from smooth as the cast struggled to get into the complex characters, the dancers mastering the ever-changing choreography, and the musicians trying to harmonise with the rest. Yet, the hardship and bumpy roads all formed the essence of GAYA, where SMUKI members gather to work hard, and are bonded together along the way, to showcase our Indonesian culture.

As a result, two unforgettable nights where the eyes of the audience were fixed on the stage. The two shows were by no means perfect, but everyone enjoyed themselves nonetheless. After all, it was the unnerving feeling when the curtain was about to open, the suppressed laughter backstage and the tears shed after the show ended that matter most. After all, it was the togetherness of the SMUKI members through GAYA that counts.

After all, the Beautiful Journey has not ended. It still continues until now through closer friendship among all.
