I believe all of you who read this newsletter would have heard of SMUKI’s Saman dance, and many would have seen SMUKI-ers perform. But have you ever wondered about what kind of training SMUKI-ers go through and what happened during the training itself? Here’s what they do. Every Monday, SMUKI-ers will go for a three hour fun-filled-muscle-bending training session instructed by Mr. Alam (an Indonesian dance specialist.), and it begin with a freestyle warm ups to avoid injuries. Next the dance moves, a line of harmonious inter-connected waving motion, will be demonstrated and SMUKI-ers will start practicing it together. That’s when the fun starts. At the first try, the line looked like a giant octopus panicking from a shark attack. Hands waved arbitrarily seeking salvation, palms hung in the air desperate to grab anything, taps changed to swings, and faces were blanked by confusion. It’s one of those sights that you have to see and laugh at before you die. After many laughs and trials, at last, SMUKI-ers managed to produce a heart of one and grace of many. Hands rise and fell harmoniously, palms connected synchronously, and the whole line looked like a precision engine running gracefully. It’s one of those sights you have to admire while you’re still living. After the fun training session SMUKI-ers were exhausted. But their minds were refreshed by the laughs, their bodies were exercised, and their reflexes sharpened. It’s certainly better than going to the gym.
