Some of you would have seen all the colourful batik clothes in the Campus Green and SIS area and wondered what they are there for. Those batik cloths are part of the “World of Batik” by the notable Singapore batik artist, Sarkasi Said. “World of Batik” exhibition is part of the Singapore Art Show by National Art Council of Singapore. SMUKI is proud to be part in organizing committee of the exhibition.
On the 6th and 7th of August 2007, SMUKI, together with MLCC and Artdicted, organized a workshop with the purpose of teaching the participants basic batik techniques. Around 20 eager participants registered for the workshop. Trained by Mr. Sarkasi himself and her daughter, Emilda, the programme included a comprehensive course on basic batik panting as well as the dip-dyeing of cloths techniques. The participants were given hands-on experience on how to apply the wax-resisting technique to produce colourful and beautiful paintings. The participants showed such talent that a few visitors of the exhibition actually offered to purchase some of the paintings created by the participants. As mentioned by one of the organizers, “The workshop also attracted a few US tourists who happened to walk past SIS, and they requested to join on the spot!” The Batik workshop was a great chance for the participants to express their creativity in a unique way. Indeed, SMUKI is proud to be able to work together with Sarkasi and other CCA in SMU to bring this enriching event for everyone.
