Click Here for more photos. DESA 2008 really lived up to its name and slogan. Perhaps the only part that was not true from all the emailers and posters that you saw was that it was not a ‘mini’ concert. The audience was enchanted from the moment they stepped into SMU’s Arts and Cultural Centre. The ordinary square room was transformed into something no one has ever seen before – an oversimplified yet uncannily close portrayal of a village in Indonesia, complete with the congklak set, bekel, graveyard and warung stall. After that, the audience was brought into a new world altogether – a world where laughter was the only policy. Starting from the charming Pak Kades – the village chief, welcoming the guests to the ever popular Saman dance and gamelan ensemble, the audience was thoroughly entertained by the witty yet silly script written. Every scene has its own ‘twists and tricks’. The hilarious portrayal of Hansip by Dimas, and Dukun by Hiubert Limas is definitely unforgettable. The ghost Kuntilanak was bone chilling yet sexy. The rebellious Pengamens turned out to be impressive guitar players. The cocky Bule Gila (Bryant Sidarta) brought along with him the guest performers of the night, Voix. They performed two timeless pieces “Yesterday” and “Stand by Me”. Of course, we should not forget the appearance of the primary school kid Anak SD and the fiercely comical Bu Kades nearing the end of the show. SMUKI also took this opportunity to unveil the new Indonesian traditional dance that is perhaps going to be the next trademark of SMUKI after the Saman dance – the “sexy and fun” Ngarojeng dance. It also introduced SMUKI’s newly formed band, where they performed two popular Indonesian songs “Terima Kasih Cinta” (by Afgan) and “Biarlah” (by Nidji). Ernest Ferdian, the vocalist, surely melted everyone’s heart with his soft and one-of-a-kind voice. Yet, the best was yet to come. The finale was a harmonious fusion of all the dances, ensemble and music from the different parts of the show. The nicely choreographed movements definitely set the right tone for the show and ended DESA with a bang. DESA was simply an experience. For the audience, it was a wonderful experience of being brought into the typical yet unique world of Indonesian village. The delicious Indonesian food from Indo Padang served afterwards definitely added the icing to the cake. For the performers and organizers, on the other hand, DESA was a whole journey to remember – one that is marked with laughter, hard work and of course the company of all the beloved friends.
